For over three decades, the Liberty Day Pageant has been a beloved tradition in Columbiana, Alabama. Started by Sheila Finley and now carried on by her daughter, Hope, this annual event isn't just about crowns and titles—it's a glimpse into the vibrant community spirit that defines Columbiana. Sheila started the pageant 35 years ago to help raise funds for the Shelby County Men's Softball League's tournaments, jerseys, and supplies. As a Columbiana native with a love for it's people and community, she quickly broadened the pageant's reach to help Columbiana Girl's City League Softball and Boy's Baseball, Cornerstone Christian School Softball, as well as various other projects around the Columbiana. Today, The Liberty Day Pageant benefits a scholarship fund at Cornerstone Christian School that is dedicated to Sheila Finley, one of Cornerstone's biggest fans and supporters.
This year's pageant was emceed by Miss Alabama 2023, Brianna Burrell, and Miss Teen Alabama 2024, Ali Mims, who also showcased their talents during the event as they sang the National Anthem, "America the Beautiful," and "O Mio Babbino Caro" by Puccini. The audience also enjoyed a performance by Miss Appalachian Valleys Teen, Charlee Reid, who entertained with a spirited Can-Can dance from "Gaîté Parisienne," and an exciting tumbling routine by The KC Twisters.
Judging the event were local personalities Miss Historic Springville, Ibby Dickson, Miss Jefferson County, Emma Terry, and Miss Leeds Teen, Christina Ray, who had the tough job of selecting winners.
The pageant, held at the Shelby County Arts Council, brought together 34 contestants across seven age groups. Competing for titles such as Teen, Junior, Petite, Little Petite, Little, Tiny, and Baby Miss Liberty as well as Pretties Smile, Hair, and Eyes. Each contestant brought their unique charm to the stage, illuminating the auditorium with smiles and enthusiasm.
A special highlight of this year's pageant was the introduction of the "Shine Like Sheila" award. This accolade, formally recognized as "Best Personality" recognizes contestants who embody the charisma, joy, and warmth that defined Sheila Finley, herself. It's a beautiful tribute to a woman whose light continues to inspire others to shine from within.
As Hope Finley put it, " Sheila's legacy reminds us that beauty transcends mere physical appearances; it lies within the depth of character, the warmth of a smile, and the way we touch the lives of others. It’s my honor to continue her legacy through this pageant to share her light that continues to shine bright within my heart to inspire others to be more beautiful from the depths of our souls." The Liberty Day Pageant is more than a contest; it's a celebration of community, talent, and the enduring spirit of Sheila Finley. Here's to many more years of beauty, joy, and inspiration!
